BIO

Ida Nisonen (b. 1981, FIN) is one of Finland's most versatile artists. Nisonen works with photography, video, object installations and performance art, and is involved in many collaborative projects. Nisonen's works deal with the issues of gender roles reflecting motherhood, creativity and being a woman, achieving both a personal and a collectively recognizable and relatable point of view. Nisonen graduated as a photographer from the Institute of Design at Lahti University of Applied Sciences and has a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Jyväskylä. In particular, the studies of feminist philosophy have had a significant impact on Nisonen's art.

“My approach is often very personal, outspoken and emancipatory. My artistic practice is always connected to the life that surrounds motherhood itself. The equation of motherhood and making art I see as a pair of opposing forces but it is the force that drives me to make art.

The basis of all my work is self-portraits, which are combined with performative actions. My works take the form of photographs, videos, object-installations, sculptures and live performances.

Right now I'm working on a new project that is about Maintenance and all that domestic work I do as being a mother of three children and an artist at the same time. It is interesting to think about what maintenance, domestic work and caregiving mean from the perspective of creativity and artistic freedom.“
