BIO

Ida Nisonen (b. 1981) is a Finnish multi-disciplinary artist working at the intersection of photography, video, object installations, and live performance. Rooted in performative self-portraiture, her work explores power, resistance, motherhood, and creativity, often questioning the tension between personal agency and societal expectations.

Drawing inspiration from feminist philosophy and literature, Nisonen delves into gender roles, embodiment, and the lived experience of motherhood. Her art becomes a site of resistance and creation, challenging cultural norms while offering new perspectives on identity, the body, and care. Whether through long-duration performances, photography, or installation, she investigates how the body can simultaneously be a subject of control and a tool of defiance.

Nisonen holds a BA in Photography from the Institute of Design at Lahti University of Applied Sciences and an MA in Philosophy from the University of Jyväskylä. Her work has been exhibited and performed widely in Finland and internationally. She has received multiple grants and recognitions, including working grants from the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and an Honorable Mention at the 18th Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Photography. In 2022, her solo exhibition Lip Service was listed among the best exhibitions of the year by Kulttuuritoimitus.fi.

Maria De Buenos Aires

Tango Opera

Maria de Buenos Aires – born on the day God was drunk.

Astor Piazzolla’s tango opera Maria de Buenos Aires will be performed in a fresh stage production.

The top-class performers include Kuopio’s own Ritva Grönberg, Annika Tepponen, and Akseli Ferrand. The musical direction of the chamber ensemble, founded by musicians from Kuopio, is led by Henrik Sandås. The stage will also sparkle with dancer Minna Tervamäki and burlesque artist Armi von Vep. The production is directed by Siljamari Heikinheimo, with visual design by artist Ida Nisonen.

Maria of Buenos Aires is conjured from the beyond; her story is told by male voices, her heart dies, her ghost is fertilized and gives birth to a child – a new Maria. Horacio Ferrer’s libretto is full of cryptic references to the Bible and the history of tango, while also raising questions about the roles assigned to women on stage and in life. Maria must give birth to her own identity anew; to create herself and renounce the narrow gaze of men. Maria must be realized through her own being.

Astor Piazzolla’s music, with its rhythmic drive and tragic yet beautiful melodies, captivates and moves as only tango at its best can. Come and experience this unique production!
